Pope Francis’ Homily for Palm Sunday, April 9, 2017 — “We must carry our own cross, not refuse it or set it aside, but rather, in looking to him, to take it up and to carry it daily.”

Peace and Freedom

The Vatican

Today’s celebration can be said to be bittersweet.  It is joyful and sorrowful at the same time.  We celebrate the Lord’s entrance into Jerusalem to the cries of his disciples who acclaim him as king.  Yet we also solemnly proclaim the Gospel account of his Passion.  In this poignant contrast, our hearts experience in some small measure what Jesus himself must have felt in his own heart that day, as he rejoiced with his friends and wept over Jerusalem.

For thirty-two years now, the joyful aspect of this Sunday has been enriched by the enthusiasm of young people, thanks to the celebration of World Youth Day.  This year, it is being celebrated at the diocesan level, but here in Saint Peter’s Square it will be marked by the deeply moving and evocative moment when the WYD cross is passed from the young people of Kraków to those of…

London’s Garden Bridge Too Expensive to be Built?

Moss and Fog

Thomas Heatherwick’s studio had a fantastic plan for a pedestrian garden bridge over the River Thames in London. For years, it was going through approvals and funding complications, but seemed destined to be built. Indeed, over £45 million has already been spent on the preparation for the project. Recently, however, the city of London has balked at the idea of a non-vehicle bridge being built at a cost of £200 million.  It’s a shame, since the design is stunning, and it would be a beautifully green contrast to London’s recent skyscraper binge.  The idea was simple:  to connect north and south London with a garden. Now that it’s future is in jeopardy, what might replace it? Let’s hope for something good. Via Dezeen:

Theme for the Week – Quirky Dorset Part 6

The Dorset Rambler

– – – Exploring The Countryside and Lanes of Dorset – – –

For our theme this week, I thought we would come back to ‘Quirky Dorset’ and feature a few more things in my lovely county that are perhaps a little bit ‘off the wall’ 🙂 ! And this is one of my favourites – it is The Smugglers’ Path.

The Smugglers’ Path, White Nothe

I love walking this path…..if you can call it a path! It runs from the top of the White Nothe  (aka White Nose) headland down to the rocky seashore some 170 meters (550 feet) below. The path is steep, very steep, and it zig zags its way down the cliff face with amazing views all across Ringstead Bay to the west. Below, there are just rocks which may be covered if the tide is high.

This is a breathtaking walk in more ways than one!…
