Public Family Law cases in the context of Miscarriages of Justice

Public family law decisions in English courts are ostensibly made to serve the best interests of the child, whose interests are given paramountcy under the Children Act 1989. Hence, there is little recognition of the capacity for decisions to constitute miscarriages of justice. This issue is of concern as research suggests that some family court decisions can have devastating long lasting consequences. This article considers the reasons why the ‘best interests’ narrative has dominated discussion in this area and asks, by considering the process of public family court decisions, whether less restrictive thinking is indicated. Shifting Blame and Disguising Shame: The Alienated Child’s Struggle

Karen Woodall

Working with children affected by parental alienation is a life changing experience. Life changing because in all encounters with alienated children, the change which is brought about occurs within the relational dynamic of the adults with whom the children are involved. This means that anyone who comes into contact with a child who has suffered from parental alienation, must understand the harm that has been done to the child and the way in which the child remains vulnerable to the splitting reaction which underpins alienation. Being sensitive to the way in which this splitting affects children, requires a counter intuitive way of working and a strong sense of what the child needs in order to recover a balance in perspective. Oysters & pearls

Thanks for indulging me – I mostly think the funny misshapen things are far more interesting than the perfectly formed things. This comic was prompted by all the little ideas that had been irritating my brain, but hadn’t formed into proper comics yet. The proper comics will come but they need more time! I am working on a longer comic at the moment – one that the kids can read (no swearing! No nudity!) and I think that is also getting in the way of me writing a comic this week. I am such a serial monogamist when it comes to creative work.

Following up on reviews, I got a lovely celebrity endorsement this week:

You can read the full article here. I have to get my hands on Gilda Kirkpatrick’s Astarons comics for my kids – I bet they’d love them.
